“He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created,” (Jms. 1:18).
God freely chose to adopt us into his family through the grace of regeneration, new birth, spiritual life. He gave us faith to become his for a specific purpose. He did not bring us into his kingdom so we could sit back and enjoy being Christians, confident that our eternal destiny is settled. He had far more in mind for us than that!
My study Bible note puts it this way, “Redeemed humanity is the pinnacle of God’s creation, regardless of when its individual members come to faith, as well as the beginning of the redemption of the whole creation.” (Col. 1:20 tells us God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in Christ and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven – letting us know that nature itself is in need of reconciliation to God.)
As “the pinnacle of God’s creation” we have a job to do. We who belong to him are the ones who show our world who he is by our behavior and the words we say. We have the privilege of representing him and the glory of his creation to the entire world. We are the only representation of God many of our loved ones, friends and acquaintances will ever see.
A song I learned as a child comes to mind, “Keep me true, Lord Jesus; keep me true. Keep me true, Lord Jesus; keep me true. There’s a race that must be run. There are vict’ries to be won. Every hour, by Thy power, keep me true.”
