Jms. 1:21 “Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you,” (Jms. 1:21).
Of first importance here is the “implanting” of the word of God. In verse 18 James said God gave us spiritual “birth through the word of truth.” If that is true of a person, then the word is implanted in that individual. The word of God is at work in believers (1 Thess. 2:13). That’s very good news since it is through that word we are able to wage an effective war against the moral filth and evil that is so prevalent, also within us. And what a conflict it is! The truth in the Scriptures provides salvation – from the immorality within and around us, as well as from eternal death and separation from God.
Apart from God himself, there is absolutely nothing more important and more powerful than his word. John Piper says we are to “humbly (with meekness) accept the word planted in” us like we receive oxygen – not taking it for granted but recognizing our continual need and breathing deeply of it. “If you are spiritually dead … you can choose not to breathe. But if you are spiritually alive, you can’t. The implanted word is powerful; it produces life and breathing. It takes over the spiritual diaphragm and demands oxygen. It demands the life-giving external word. If the word is implanted in you, you can’t hold your breath forever. The implanted word will sooner or later conquer and be replenished. You will receive the word again. And you will love it.
“You never outgrow your need for the good news of forgiven sin and imputed righteousness and eternal life and God being totally for you—and all of this by grace alone, on the basis of Christ alone, through faith alone, to the glory of God alone.”
As a follower of Jesus who has been given spiritual life I desperately need a steady diet (read “daily”) of God’s word, it is my life support!
