It is an astounding concept to me that Almighty God would choose to rejoice over me with singing. I don’t deserve for anyone to do that, let alone the God who created all the universes! This is the God who knows all the reasons not to sing over me.
“The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty, he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing,” (Zeph. 3:17).
Just this morning I am struck with Zephaniah 3:17. God declares his presence. He not only resides above the heavens. He also is with us, “in the midst of thee.” He is not far from any one of us. He is near.
He says he is not only in our midst but he’s also mighty on our behalf. He will save! He provides the necessary redemption that makes me someone over whom he wants to sing. I find that jaw-dropping, totally amazing.
When he sings over us, those he saves, he is rejoicing with joy. He is happy, delighted, very pleased to have us in his kingdom. It gives him great pleasure – so much pleasure that he breaks forth in song. We bring joy to Almighty God! Don’t you find that astonishing?
When he rests “in his love”, the original language for that phrase indicates his choice to remain silent about our sin. The Amplified translation puts it this way: “He will rest [in silent satisfaction] and in His love He will be silent and make no mention [of past sins, or even recall them]…” What love is this!
How can I do anything less than respond in love to treasure this God?
