Psalm 79

O God, your longsuffering patience has expired and your judgment on our rebellion is fierce! You have anointed the neighboring nations to bring total ruin to Jerusalem and your temple, to end the lives of most of your people and make the rest slaves in Babylon.

Will you be angry forever? Will we never again be the recipients of your mercy? We are in desperate need! Please do not hold against us all the sin of the generations before us.

It is well known that we belong to you. Surrounding nations know that you are the God of Israel even if we had forgotten you. For the sake of your own name, the glory and reputation of your name, forgive our sin, deliver us; reverse your wrath and expend it on the nations who are destroying your people!

We, your people, the sheep of your pasture, will praise you forever; from generation to generation we will declare your praise.
